阿智上小学时，在他居住的生活区里，有一位老太太自杀了。
事情发生在上世纪六十年代，文化大革命的初期。

这一天凌晨，天尚未亮，但是惯于早起的人已经出了家门。
有一位三号楼的居民出了楼门往北行，当他经过小柏树林时，隐隐约约地看到一棵柏树向外倾倒着，树旁有一个黑影。他觉得奇怪，就靠近看了看，没想到那个黑影却是一个吊着的人！
他又惊又怕，便喊叫了起来，引过来了另外几个人。大家到吊着的人跟前一看，是位老太太。
有人认识她，是五号楼的黄老太太。
人们在黄老太太鼻下试了试，已经没有了气息，可是身上尚有余温，显然死的时间不太长。众人忙将死者放下来，有人去叫来了她的家人。
一个脆弱的生命就这样草草地结束了。然而，院儿里的居民们却对黄老太太之死存有各种各样的疑问：
据熟悉黄老太太的人说，这位老太太身板硬朗，为人和善，此前没人发现她有任何的异常迹象。那么，一个原本不存在丝毫自杀动机的人，却是突然遇上了多么难过去的坎儿，竟然选择了自杀？
