从前有座山，山上有个庙，庙里住着一个和尚。有一天傍晚，和尚要去给山下一个死者做法事，死者第二天就要出殡。这和尚刚走到半山腰，天就黑下来了，正巧遇到某客上山，某客平常与和尚交情很深。客人问和尚到哪里去，和尚说要去做法事，晚上不回来。客人说：“我正要去你那儿投宿，你不在我可怎么办呢？”和尚说便取钥匙给某客，请他自己去庙中歇息。于是互相道别，一个奔山上庙中而去，一个向山下而往。
客人一个人来到山上庙中，这时明月升上东山，月明如昼。只见庵内空空荡荡，悄然无一点声息，星月的微光洒地，更显得寂静。
客人因为寂寞难耐，就在屋里屋外漫步，到二更天才躺下睡觉。还未等睡熟，朦胧中就听见有敲门声，客人即刻从睡梦中惊醒。
这个客人平素胆大勇猛，天不怕地不怕。他想：“山下山上，庵里庵外就我一个人，怎么会有人敲门呢！”他猜想敲门者肯定是鬼，于是便大声叱责说：“你是什么东西，敢来此作祟？”
门外人答：“我乃某甲也。”
某甲是客人的旧相知，已经死了多年了。客人闻听是某甲，就不肯为他开门。
那鬼说：“如果不开门相宴请，我就自己进去了。”
客人感到门轧轧有声，不一会儿，那鬼一直进入内室坐在和尚的禅椅上，并喊客相互作揖见礼。
客人说：“你已死了多年，为什么还到这儿来？”
鬼说：“我与你相从漫游已久，从不曾死，怎么用死跟我开玩笑呢？”
客人说：“我还清楚地记得某年某月某日，到你家给你送葬的情景，你现这么说话，难道说我怕鬼吗？”
鬼笑着说：“好了，不要多说了，我的确已经死了。我之所以连夜随你上山来，是有事求助于你，请你无论如何听我说，为我办好这件事。”那鬼顿了一顿，伤心地接着说：“我不幸去世还不到一周年，我的妻子便择婿改嫁。所有箱柜货财，田庐契券，全部被妻子带走。只剩下我可怜的儿子，才刚刚九岁，无依无靠，孤苦伶仃，饥寒冻馁，简直就像一个小乞丐。现在，我与妻子阴阳两隔，无法诉论对质，求你看在我们平生友谊的份上，替我把此事报告官府，使我的儿子得以自存，如能这样，我在九泉之下也能够无恨而瞑目了。”
客人惊异地看着鬼那张满是泪水的脸，对他和那弃儿的悲惨处境深表同情，慨然允诺了鬼的要求。于是，鬼一样一样的历数了家中的财产，有钱粮多少，布帛多少，有田若干，房若干，哪些东西在妻子处，哪些东西在某乡某里，客人一一记下。
这样你说我记，互相话语酬答，不觉已到了四更天。于是客人对那鬼说：“所托之事我已应允，你可以走了，现在我要睡觉了。”只见那鬼默默不语，连呼数声也不答应，客人便假装睡着了发出轻微斯声，那鬼也打呼呼，客人疲倦了，靠在墙壁上，那鬼也装出困顿的样子。客人揭开慢帐咳嗽吐痰，鬼也连吐两口。这时客人才感到有些害怕，连忙下床疾走，鬼也从椅子上站起来，朝客人追去。客人更加害怕起来，加快了脚步，一直朝正殿跑去。鬼也跟着追到了正殿，眼看已经追上了，客人忽然想起人们都说鬼怪一般只会走直路，不会转变，于是就改变方向环绕柱子跑。鬼跟踉跄跄向前直追，一头撞在大殿的柱子上，便一把抱住柱子，再也不动弹了。客人吓得头也不回地奔出门去，向山下猛跑。
这时，天已大亮。客人跑至山脚下，遇到了从山下归来的和尚。客人向他叙述了夜里的所见所闻，以及被鬼追赶之事。说话之间还回顾前后，显出魂飞魄散的样子。和尚忙用话语安慰客人。
客人责怪说：“师父把我一个人扔在深山古庙，你自己念经理佛，安然无恙，朝夕饱食，怎能知道我惊恐到怎样的地步啊！”
和尚说：“别提了，我所遇到的事更是出奇。昨晚法事才收，那家人将要把棺木抬起来，刚一动，抬棺的人却感到里面是空的。打开棺盖一看，里面的尸体不翼而飞了。这时候，满屋的人都
惊慌失措，谁也不知道是什么原因。送葬的人都吓跑了，我也奔跑到这里才遇到你。”
他们说着话一起上山，打开庙门，看见一人抱柱如故，和尚走近前去细看，仿佛是那棺木之中新死的人。急忙奔下山去，告诉了他的儿子，并召集邻里村民一同来察看。那儿子一看果真是其父的尸体，不禁掩面大哭。家里人上前来抬取尸体，那尸抱柱牢不可脱，以至于用木柱支着大梁，锯数半截柱子，才解脱尸体，使其入土安身。
到这时，客人才恍然大悟，原来，鬼要现形就必须有所依托，他的朋友是旧鬼，尸已腐烂，为托孤之事，便借新尸还魂。等把所托之事叙完，那旧鬼的魂魄便离体而还，回到冥府，而新鬼怅怅然无所依托，便出现了后来的怪事。这正是旧鬼借新尸还魂，新鬼替旧鬼诉冤。
客人为九泉之下的朋友尽心竭力，把他所托之事告诉了里正，里正又把此事报告了县衙，县衙郑重审理了此案，使那弃儿终有了安身之所。
