这个故事，发生在天山南麓的一个普通的林场里。
当时这个林场与外界的联系还很少，只有一条小路通到外面。每年冬天大雪封山，这里就彻底与外面失去联系。林场里最初是蒙古族人居住，后来汉族人迁入越来越多，渐渐就成了汉族人的天下。尤其是那段贫苦的日子，由于林场里物资丰富，有羊有牛，还可以采蘑菇和雪莲，那里的居民生活得倒也不错。后来通往外面的那条小路逐渐拓宽，林场又大力发展伐木业，把木头运到山外，居民的生活越加富裕了。
1980年，国家刚刚开始改革开放。山外的城市也纷纷搞建设，对木材的需求特别大。那段时间，林场的伐木业非常兴盛。不封山的日子里，每天都会有十几辆大卡车装满了木材从山里的各个伐木点开到林场里，再运出去。当时山里的伐木点都离场部很远，每天一大早，司机就得开车进山，往往到了晚上八九点才能回来。那年夏天，有一个叫小孙的司机像往常一样随着其他几个司机一起清晨开车进山。他们各管一片伐木点，一个伐木点分派一辆车，早上空车过去，晚上拉着木头回来，还有一辆专门拉伐木工人。
这一天很快就过去了。到了晚上，卡车陆续回来了，唯独小孙的车没有回来。同去的司机认为小孙可能开得慢，再等等吧。没成想等到晚上十一点半，小孙的车子还是没有踪影。车队长老王觉得蹊跷，早上明明和小孙一起进的山，小孙那片的伐木工人也亲手在小孙车上装的货，怎么连那一片的工人都回来了他还没回呢？难道在回来的途中出了什么状况？于是老王和另外一个司机老周一起开车连夜进山，顺着那片伐木区的山路找。当时林场里的人也没怎么在意，以为肯定是小孙的车抛锚耽误了。
第二天半夜，老王和老周的车没有回来，第三天一早，老王和老周的车还是没有回来。这时林场的人急了，一定出事了！于是林场里组织了十几个青壮年小伙子，开着两辆大卡车进山找人。晚上，这两辆车回来了，仍然什么也没有找到。小孙，老王和老周，还有两辆解放牌大卡车，就消失在了山里。
林场乱了套，这三个人的家属在场部门口大哭大闹，领导也觉得不可思议。怎么人说没就没了？没办法，领导只得打电话求助县里。第三天中午，县里派来了搜救干警，进山救人。林场也组织了大量人手帮忙。这种地毯式搜救终于有了成果。在通往小孙那天进去的山道旁边半公里的密林里，发现了小孙的车，但是发现那辆车的干警和群众，无不被眼前的情景所震惊。只见那辆老旧的解放牌卡车，生生翻倒在一片被伐去树干只剩树根的空地上，车斗朝下，四轮朝上，车厢已被压得稀烂，小孙呢？却不在里面。诡异的是，这片空地周围的树都完好无损，也没有车撞的痕迹，从这里到那条山路也没有车辙的痕迹。那么，小孙的车是怎么到这片林子里的呢？在不撞到周围树的情况下，车又怎么生生翻了一百八十度倒过来的呢？小孙的人呢？干警和现场的群众都非常的疑惑。他们找来了伐木工人，把通往山路的所有树都伐掉，才勉强把这辆“深埋”在林子里的车拖出来。破损的车厢里什么也没有，连血迹也没有，这就是一辆空车！而老王和老周，以及他们开的那辆车，依然不见踪影。搜救队寻找了五六天，什么都没有找到。
这件事被县里的公安部门定性为人口失踪事件，就搁在那里不了了之了。也就是受到这件事的影响，山里伐木的活动渐渐少了，大家内心深处都有些恐惧，难保这样的事不会落到自己头上。通往小孙出事的那条山路也被遗弃了，再没有人进去过。小孙、老王和老周的家属自从那件事后就都迁出了林场，不知去了哪里。听说小孙的父母受不了失去孩子的痛苦，都一病不起，不久就先后去世。
2004年，我最后一次去林场，从一个老司机口中听说了这个诡异的故事。他还带我去了那个被废弃的山路路口。那条路由于二十多年没有人踏入，早已破败不堪。从路口向里望去，里面的树木郁郁葱葱，遮天蔽日，好像比别处的树长得都高，都大……老司机感慨地对我说，现在不知有几个人还知道小孙、老王和老周的名字，有几个人还在期望某一天他们能开着那辆解放牌大卡车，从这林子里出来……
