赶尸匠的家里，跟一般农民一样，照样“日出而作，日落而息”。只有接到赶尸业务时，他们才将自己装束一番，前去赶尸。他们虽赶尸，却忌讳赶尸这个名词。因而，内行人请他们赶尸，都说：“师父，请你去走脚”或“走一回脚”。赶尸匠若答应、他便拿出一张特制的黄纸，让你将死人的名字、出生年月、去世年月、性别等写在这张黄纸上，然后画一张符，贴在这张黄纸上，最后将这张黄纸藏在自己身上。
赶尸匠的穿着也十分特别：不管什么天气，都要穿着一双草鞋，身上穿一身青布长衫，腰间系一黑色腰带，头上戴一顶青布帽，腰包藏着一包符。
